Post-purchase upsell not showing? Check these causes in order
You set up a post-purchase offer, placed a test order, and landed straight on the thank-you page. Before deciding the app is broken, know this: Shopify decides whether the post-purchase page appears at all, and it skips it for a good share of real orders. The causes fall into three groups â how the customer paid, what kind of order it was, and your own setup. Check them in that order.
1. How the customer paid
The post-purchase page only exists when Shopify can add a charge to the payment it has just authorized. That rules out several payment methods:
- Wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay and Amazon Pay.
- Buy now, pay later services such as Klarna, Affirm and Afterpay.
- Gift cards, and payment methods that arenât a credit card.
- Some third-party card gateways that need to keep the cardâs security code, such as Braintree, Payflow Pro, PayPal Payments Pro and Eway.
This is the most common reason a test âfailsâ. If you paid with a wallet on your phone, the page was never going to appear. Test with a card: on a development store, Shopifyâs Bogus Gateway accepts the card number 1.
2. What kind of order it was
- Orders from a sales channel other than the Online Store, such as point of sale.
- Local delivery and local pickup.
- Orders with no shipping address, such as digital products only.
- Orders with duties and multiple currencies, which mostly concerns cross-border orders.
- Orders under $0.50.
Shopify also warns that the page may not surface during extreme platform load. On the busiest days of the year, a few orders can skip it for reasons no app controls.
These conditions come from Shopifyâs developer documentation on post-purchase offers, checked on September 18, 2026. They apply to every app that uses this page, not to one in particular.
3. Your own setup
If the order qualifies and the page still doesnât appear, look at your side:
- Only one app can run post-purchase offers. In Shopify, open Settings, then Checkout, and check which app is selected for the post-purchase page. If you have tried several upsell apps, the old one may still hold the slot.
- The offerâs conditions have to match the order. An offer triggered by a product or a collection only appears when the order contains it.
- The offered product has to be available. If it was deleted, archived, or canât ship to the customerâs address, a careful app shows nothing rather than an offer that would fail at the last click.
- Many apps, FlatUpsell included, wonât offer a product that is already in the order. Test with the offered product in the cart, and you will see nothing.
How to test it properly
- Use a card payment and an ordinary shipping address.
- Put the product that triggers the offer in the cart, and not the offered product.
- Afterwards, open the appâs dashboard: an offer that was displayed should appear as a view.
FlatUpsell counts a view only when the offer actually appeared on the customerâs screen, not when it was computed. So if you know orders are coming in and the dashboard shows no post-purchase views, the page isnât appearing, and the list above is where to look.
What it means for your numbers
Since part of your orders never reaches the post-purchase page, judge an offer on the orders that saw it, not on all your orders. A store where most customers pay with Apple Pay will record fewer post-purchase views than its order count suggests. Thatâs normal, and it is a good reason to also make an offer on the cart page, which comes before the customer chooses how to pay.
