Upsells for dropshipping stores: what changes without your own stock
In a dropshipping store, an upsell doesn’t end at the click. The accepted item has to be ordered from a supplier, shipped, and reach the same customer, sometimes from another warehouse on another timeline. An offer that looks good on screen can turn into two parcels, two tracking numbers and a support ticket.
Offer from the same supplier
The most important rule: offer products that ship from the same supplier and the same warehouse as the main item. The add-on then travels in the same parcel, arrives at the same time, and costs little extra to ship. An accessory from another supplier may arrive a week later and look like a missing item.
Check the supplier’s stock, not only Shopify’s
Your Shopify stock is often a copy of the supplier’s, updated every few hours. An offer is shown to many customers in a short time, and if the item runs out at the supplier, you sell something you can’t deliver. Offer products that are reliably available, and check how often their stock is synced.
Mind the margin
Dropshipping margins are thin, and the supplier’s price doesn’t drop because the item is an add-on. Work out the offer’s margin after the discount and after any extra shipping the supplier charges for a second item. If it is close to zero, offer it at full price or pick another product.
Delivery times belong in the offer
If delivery takes two weeks, don’t hide it. An add-on that arrives with the main order is fine. If it might arrive separately, say so, or don’t offer it. “Where is my second item?” messages cost more than the sale brings in.
Returns
If the customer sends the add-on back, you may not be able to return it to the supplier. Offer things that are rarely returned — accessories, consumables, small items with an obvious use — and avoid anything that depends on size or fit.
Test the whole path once
Before or after payment, the accepted item joins the same Shopify order. What matters is that your supplier app forwards it along with the rest. Place one real test order with an accepted offer and follow it all the way: order sent to the supplier, add-on included, one parcel shipped.
With FlatUpsell
FlatUpsell offers one product per moment, which suits dropshipping well: one add-on, chosen from the same supplier, in the same parcel. Test the full path once with a real order before turning the offer on for everyone.
