Can you upsell on Shopify without an app? Yes, up to a point

2 min read

Every app you install adds a monthly bill and one more thing to keep an eye on, so it is a fair question: how far can you go with what Shopify already gives you? Further than most app listings suggest. Here is what works without installing anything that charges, and where it stops.

Products that go together, on the product page

Most recent themes, Shopify’s free ones included, have a block that shows other products next to or under the one being viewed. Shopify fills it automatically with products it considers related. For a real upsell you want to choose them yourself, and that is what Search & Discovery, a free app made by Shopify, lets you do with complementary products. Pick the charger for the phone case, the refill for the diffuser, and your theme shows them as products that pair well.

Complementary products only appear if your theme has a block for them, and the recommended products must be active and in stock.

Automatic discounts that reward a bigger order

Shopify’s own discounts cover the classic mechanics, without any code to type:

  • Buy X, get Y: a second item free or discounted when the first one is in the cart.
  • An amount off above a minimum order, such as $10 off from $80.
  • A discount from a minimum quantity of items.

They reward the customer for adding something, but they don’t show them what to add. A discount nobody notices in time is a cut in your margin, not an upsell.

A free-shipping threshold

Free shipping above an amount takes a few minutes to set in your shipping settings, and it is one of the strongest levers on order value, as long as the threshold sits a little above your typical order. Some themes show in the cart how much is left to reach it; if yours doesn’t, say it in the announcement bar.

What you can’t do without an app

Two things stay out of reach with Shopify alone:

  • An offer at the moment the customer clicks checkout. Recommendations on a page get scrolled past; an offer at the checkout click is seen by everyone who gets that far.
  • A one-click offer after payment. The post-purchase page only exists through an app, and it is the only place where a customer can add a product without entering their card again.

Both moments come after the customer has decided to buy. That is why they tend to convert better than a block of recommendations halfway down a page, and why they are the ones worth paying for.

A sensible order

  1. Set a free-shipping threshold just above your typical order.
  2. Choose complementary products for your best sellers in Search & Discovery.
  3. Add an automatic discount if your margin allows it.
  4. Then, once you know which pairs sell, add an app for the checkout click and the post-purchase page.

FlatUpsell covers exactly those last two moments, for one flat price, and doesn’t try to replace what Shopify already does for free.
