Thank-you page or post-purchase page: two different places
Both pages appear after the customer pays, and both get sold as places for “post-purchase offers”. They are different places with different powers, and mixing them up leads to expectations no app can meet.
The order of pages
- Checkout: contact details, delivery, payment.
- Post-purchase page: shown right after the payment is authorized, if an app provides one and Shopify allows it for that order.
- Thank-you page: the order confirmation, with the order number and summary.
- Order status page: the same confirmation, which the customer can reopen later from their email.
The post-purchase page: add to the same order
This is the only page where an app can add an item to the order that was just paid, charged to the same payment method, without the customer entering their card again. They accept or decline, then continue to the thank-you page.
Shopify skips the page in several cases, notably when the customer paid with a wallet, a buy-now-pay-later service, a gift card or cash on delivery, and for local delivery orders.
The thank-you page: show, inform, invite
On the thank-you page the checkout is over. Apps can add content there: a survey, a discount code for next time, delivery information, product recommendations. What they cannot do is add an item to the order that was just paid in one click. A product offered there leads to a new cart and a new payment.
According to Shopify’s documentation, checkout UI extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps are limited to Shopify Plus, while the thank-you and order status pages are not restricted in the same way.
Which one to use
| Goal | Post-purchase page | Thank-you page |
|---|---|---|
| Add an item to the same order | Yes, in one click | No, it takes a new order |
| Offer a discount for next time | Possible | Well suited |
| Ask for feedback or a review | Not the place | Well suited |
| Reach customers who paid with a wallet | No, Shopify skips the page | Yes |
| Explain delivery or set expectations | Too early | Well suited |
They complement each other. The post-purchase page is where you sell one more item now; the thank-you page is where you prepare the next order and answer the questions the customer has right after buying.
A note on wording
When an app advertises “thank-you page upsells”, read what it means in practice: an offer that needs a second checkout is not the same thing as a one-click add to the existing order. Both can be worth having, but they don’t convert the same way, and only one of them keeps the order in one piece.
Where FlatUpsell sits
FlatUpsell uses the post-purchase page for its one-click offer and the cart page for its offer before payment. It does not add content to the thank-you page, so if that is what you need, you are looking for a different tool, and the two can live side by side.
