Upsell vs cross-sell: the difference, with Shopify examples
The two words are often used as if they meant the same thing. They don’t, and the difference changes which product you should offer, and where.
Upselling: a better version of the same thing
An upsell moves the customer to a more expensive version of what they are already buying: the 500 ml bottle instead of the 250 ml, the leather strap instead of the fabric one, the pack of six instead of three.
- It replaces or extends the original choice.
- It works best while the customer is still choosing: on the product page or in the cart.
Cross-selling: something that goes with it
A cross-sell adds a different product that complements the first: batteries with the toy, a cleaning kit with the sneakers, a card with the flowers.
- It adds to the order without changing the original item.
- It works before payment and after, because the first choice stays the same.
In practice, apps call both “upsells”
Most Shopify apps, FlatUpsell included, use “upsell” for any offer that raises the order value, whether it is a better version or a complementary product. The label matters less than the question behind it: does this offer replace what the customer chose, or add to it?
Examples by type of store
| Store | Upsell | Cross-sell |
|---|---|---|
| Fashion | The premium fabric version of the same shirt | A belt or socks that match |
| Beauty | Full size instead of travel size | A cleanser that goes with the serum |
| Coffee | A 1 kg bag instead of 250 g | Filters or a grinder |
| Pet supplies | The larger bag of food | Treats or a bowl |
| Electronics | The model with more storage | A case, a charger or a cable |
Where each one belongs
An upsell asks the customer to reconsider a choice, so it belongs before payment, while the choice is still open. A cross-sell asks for a small extra decision, so it works in the cart and after payment as well.
After payment, stick to cross-sells. The customer has already chosen and paid; offering a better version of what they just bought can feel like being told they chose wrong.
Pricing the offer
A cross-sell usually works best when it costs a fraction of the main item. An upsell is judged on the price difference, not on the full price: “+$8 for the large size” is an easier yes than “$32 for the large size”.
How FlatUpsell handles it
In FlatUpsell, an offer is a rule: when the cart or the order contains a product, or a product from a collection, suggest another product, with an optional discount. The suggested product is added next to the original one, never in its place, which makes FlatUpsell a cross-selling tool in both placements. For a true upgrade, such as a larger size, the product page remains the best place.
