Black Friday upsells: what to change before the holiday rush
Between late November and Christmas, many stores make a large share of their year. Every offer is shown more often, so a good one earns more than in any other month, and a broken one costs more. The work is mostly done before the rush, not during it.
In October: check that everything still works
- Place a full test order for each offer, on a phone and paying by card, and make sure the offer appears.
- Check the stock of every offered product. An offer for something that sells out on Black Friday morning is a disappointment by the afternoon.
- Look at how your app bills you. If it charges by order volume or by a share of upsell revenue, your biggest month is also its most expensive. Work out the November bill now rather than discover it in December.
For the sale: rethink the discount, not only the product
During a store-wide sale, customers already have a discount on everything. An upsell at 10% off looks weak next to a 30% banner, and stacking one discount on another can eat your margin. Two better options:
- Offer something that isnāt in the sale ā a gift box, a care kit, an accessory ā with a modest discount of its own.
- Use the moment for a product that completes the gift: wrapping, a card, a second small item for someone else.
Think about gifts
In December, many orders are gifts. The best offer is often not for the buyer but for the person receiving it: wrapping, a card, a matching smaller item. And customers buying for several people are open to āone more for someone elseā.
Shipping deadlines change the offer
Close to Christmas, an offer is only worth accepting if it arrives in time. If an item ships from another warehouse or supplier, or takes longer to prepare, take it out of your offers in the last week rather than create a late parcel.
What to leave alone
- Donāt install a new app or launch a brand-new offer on Black Friday itself. If something breaks, you will find out with the highest traffic of your year.
- Donāt start an A/B test during the rush and apply its winner in January. Holiday shoppers donāt behave like January shoppers.
- Donāt add urgency you donāt mean. A real sale already has a real deadline.
Expect some post-purchase offers not to show
Shopify notes that under extreme platform load the post-purchase page may not appear, and wallet payments such as Apple Pay never show it. On the busiest days, keep a cart-page offer as well, so you donāt depend on a single moment.
