Gift wrap and gift add-ons: the easiest upsell of the year

2 min read

Most upsells ask the customer to want something more. A gift add-on doesn’t. They have already bought a present, and you are offering to make it look like one. That is why wrapping and cards are among the easiest offers to accept, and why they deserve to be set up properly rather than as an afterthought.

What counts as a gift add-on

  • Gift wrapping or a gift box.
  • A printed or handwritten card.
  • A gift receipt, or a packing slip without prices.
  • A small extra that completes the present: a candle with the diffuser, a travel size of the cream.

Make it a product

The simplest way on Shopify is to create each add-on as a product: “Gift wrapping”, with a photo of the real wrapping and a price. It then joins the order like anything else, whoever packs the parcel sees it on the order, and any upsell app can offer it. Two details: give it no weight so it doesn’t change shipping rates, and keep it out of your main collections so it doesn’t clutter the catalog.

For the card message, most themes can show a note field on the cart page. Check that yours is switched on and easy to see.

Price it simply

Gift add-ons sell on convenience, not on discount. A round, modest price reads well — $4 for wrapping, $3 for a card — and there is rarely a reason to discount it. If wrapping costs you time as much as paper, price the time.

Offer it where gift buyers decide

  • Before payment is the right moment for wrapping and cards: they must be in the order before the parcel is packed, and the card needs a message.
  • After payment works for a second gift: “add a small one for someone else”, shipped in the same parcel.
  • Target the offer. Gift add-ons make sense on products people give, not on refills or spare parts.

The season matters

An offer ignored in March can be accepted by many customers in December. Turn it on for the gift seasons that matter to your store — the end-of-year holidays, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s and Father’s Day — and off the rest of the year if it only gets in the way.

Don’t forget the packing

The offer is the easy part. Make sure the add-on is obvious to whoever packs the order, and that a gift receipt really leaves the prices out. A present that arrives unwrapped, or with its price showing, costs you far more than the $4.
